Double Pleat Cellular Shades aka the Accordion Window Covering

By: Osmundo Bernabe

For those of you who wouldn’t recognize double pleat cellular shades if you tripped over are the type of window shade that crumples up like an accordion. It crumples upwards or downwards depending on whether or not you are opening or closing the window. The pleats are created by ruching that occurs when the pleated shade is pulled either up or down by a cord. They can be made from all sorts of interesting fabrics but the latest trend is solar fabric. Double pleat cellular contain honeycomb shaped cells that absorb the light from the sun keeping a room warm or cool depending on your needs. The reason they are called double pleated is they can be lowered from the top or the bottom.

Many people like the flexible functionality of double pleat cellular shades. They can be lowered until they are black out a room. They are especially efficient at making a room as black as possible because they are made out of the room darkening fabric that consists of honey comb shaped cells.

Not only does blacking out the room complete keep curious eyes from looking in the window it also makes the room like night (which can be handy if you are trying to get your kid to take a nap.) These types of pleated shades were created to help people protect their furniture from fading in strong sun.

Double pleat cellular shades also come in different ratings. A solar shade that comes with a rating of 3 will block out 97% of the light. One that is rated 5 will block out 94% of the light and one that is rated 10 will block out 90% of the sun’s harmful rays. The heavier fabrics look very attractive when the shade is pulled up as they give the shade a lush wrinkled appearance. Lighter fabrics look very ethereal in pleated cellular shades, almost like delicate mosquito netting.

Some manufacturers offer these types of shades in more colors and styles than others. Probably the company that offers the most options when it comes to your options is Duette Cellular, which gives you the choice of blinds in 124 colors as well as the option of adding a metallic finish.

You can usually buy double pleated cellular blinds off the store shelves, as there is a glut of them on the market. You can also find them online or offline at both retail and discount prices. When shopping for pleated cellular shades you should look for a company that offers inexpensive installation, the choice of remote or manually operated shades (or both) and high quality shades that operate seamlessly and that do not sag in the middle.
