How To Connect Your Motorized Vertical Blinds

By: Osmundo Bernabe

Connecting motorized vertical blinds is as easy as connecting a telephone for most people. It’s also good to know that most brands of motorizing vertical blinds actually come with cords that can allow you to manually manipulate them in case you can’t figure it out. However for the most part connecting and operating motorized vertical blinds is pretty simple and most people can install them alone simply by following the manufacturer’s directions that are usually included when you buy motorized blinds.

Generally, there are two main ways of connecting your motorized vertical blinds and some brands offer both ways. The first way is called a switch control and the second way is by infrared remote control. A quality motorized vertical blind company will have installed a direct drive motor in the blinds that has a built-in overload protection so that short-circuiting is not possible. The motor is usually strong enough to propel vinyl, fabric or plastic vanes along a track as long as 16 feet. All of the wiring and the motor for the blinds are usually concealed in a vertical blind valance.

The switch controls that often come with motorized vertical blinds are usually wall-mounted units but you can also set them on a table to use a table top on and off switch. A quality motorized vertical blinds company will also provide a cord that is at least 18 feet long that attaches to the switch so that you can put the switch in a convenient spot. These types of wall-mounted switches are usually powered by a couple of AA long life batteries. The wall switch is then connected to the motorized vertical blinds with a modular plug. This is the same type of plug that you use to connect your telephone. There is jack right in the valance that is easy to find so that you can connect your blinds in a similar manner.

Motorized vertical blinds that are manipulated by remote control are installed in much the same way except that the power source is different. Rather than battery power, the remote control system uses a permanently installed 9-volt transformer to supply power to the blind. You have to plug it in so there must be an electrical outlet within sixteen feet or so at either end of the track. The power supply connects directly to the remote receiver with a jack – the same kind of modular plug that is used for your telephone as described above.

The remote control itself is powered by a couple of AA batteries. Remote controls for motorized vertical blinds are also capable of multi-tasking at more than one window. Most remote controls for vertical blinds can control up three sets of vertical blinds at once.
