Installation of Vertical Blinds

By: Osmundo Bernabe

Unless you are prepared to get up on a ladder or two and have someone to help you then the installation of vertical blinds is best left to a professional. This is because most vertical blind tracks are ordered for windows that are quite large (sometimes as large as sixteen feet.) There is no way that one person can handle this type of vertical blind track by his or herself and it can be a challenge to get the track to hang over the window in a level manner in the first place. Remember that if you mishandle the installation of vertical blinds by hanging them on a slant, all your slats with crash together and refuse to close or open properly.

To make things even more complex the slats themselves can also be very long and unwieldy. Although they are quite easy in most cases to simply hook onto the small plastic metal hooks of the tracking mechanism inside the metal box that is the valance for the vertical blinds, they are sharp and bend. This puts you in danger of cutting your hands or another part of your body if you are not really careful about the way you handle them. They are almost like large stiff pieces of paper that can give you an extra deep paper cut. This is why if you do insist on doing the installation of vertical blinds by yourself or with a friend then you should take all safety precautions including wearing thick protective gloves and goggles to protect your eyes. Being hit with the edge of an unbalanced slat in the face could result in a loss of eyesight.

If you custom order vertical blinds the company will usually also offer to install them for you as part of the deal. You should definitely get an expert to install your blinds if you have ordered the motorized kind. However you probably don’t need an expert to help you to hook up the switch or remote that controls the blinds. That part is usually quite easy and as simple as connecting a telephone jack to the motorized casing of the blinds to the remote or the switch that you want to use to operate the blinds.

With such a staggering choice of materials (including wood, polyvinyl and metal) vertical blinds on the market you should have no problem finding the vertical blinds that are right for you. They can be used to add a sense of grandness to a small room and they can be used to make a large room look smaller (if you choose ones in a dark color.) However keep in mind the installation of vertical blinds is not that practical for every room, especially those rooms where there are pets or children.
