Roller shutters formerly were not a common site on residences. These are not full functioning façade shutters but rather small versions meant to seal off opening to your house with impenetrable shields of metal.

They now come in different finishes and colors to make them more attractive and less of a target for graffiti artists. It is recommended that if you do decide to invest in roller shutters that you buy one with a mechanism that allows you to open the shutters manually or you could be in big trouble in the case of a fire where the roller shutters refuse to open with a remote control.

Roller shutters are perfect for vacation homes, especially in areas where there are a lot of tropical gale force winds and debris flying during hurricane season. The roller shutters also allow you to quickly and easily prepare for a hurricane that is coming. Instead of having to nail up pieces of wood over your windows to prevent them from shattering you cut your labor by about 99.99% by simply pressing a button and rolling the shutters closed.

Roller shutters are also ideal for the spaces of filmmakers and photographers who require complete control of their lighting. When the roller shutters are down all sunlight is blocked out so that any artificial lighting used to accomplish the photo shoot inside is not interfered with.

One drawback of roller shutters is that they really do look military. They don’t do a great deal to add to the value of a home as they make it seem like the house must be subject to a lot of crime or abuse. Unfortunately if you are trying to sell your home it is best to remove the roller shutters. In most neighborhoods this is because the presence of them on a home symbolizes fear.
