Window Covering Problems

By: Osmundo Bernabe

Sometimes the shape, location or style of your window can present a design problem when it comes to hanging window treatments. Here are some solutions for some common window covering problems.

One of the most common of window covering problems is the bedroom or bathroom that faces directly into a view from a window from the house next door. This usually occurs when the bathroom is on the second floor in older homes that have small bathrooms that could use more light in the first place. In this case a good idea might be to frost the window with a film or laminate that is directly pasted on to the window at the level that others can see in. This is a definite solution as it still lets plenty of natural light through the outdoors inside without gratifying curious eyes.

Yet another one of the most common window covering problems is the south-facing window that lets in too much heat or light during the summer months. In this instance it is probably a great idea to install either window shutters, Venetian blinds or roll down shades. Window shutters and Venetian blinds have lateral or horizontal slats can help you arrange the light in a way that is most flattering for the room. During the hot hours of the day you can close a roll down shade completely and completely block out the room. If you are really concerned about losing heat or taking in too much heat then you could also consider exterior shutters, which seal up the house completely. The only problem with exterior shutters is that they don’t let in any light at all and some people find this a bit claustrophobic. They are also not your best option if you own plants.

Yet another common problem is the odd shaped window such as the triangle, the octagon or other off shapes. In this case you are best of to buy a wall-mounted rod and hang your preferred type of window covering (curtain, window shade or Venetian blind) over it. If it is a window that opens you might also want to consider frosting it over with safety film.

If you live in a dangerous crime ridden urban area then security and privacy might be of the utmost importance to you. If this is the case then metal roll down shutters, Venetian blinds or shades might the optimum solution for you. You also might want to consider installing metal bars in the window as well to keep out intruders. These metal bars are not as ugly as they used to. You can now get them in all kinds of designs and grids that help make your home look secure without looking or feeling like a prison.
