Cleaning Window Blinds TipsBy: Osmundo Bernabe
Maintaining clean window blinds is what we always want to achieve; cleaning window blinds on the other hand may not be a very inviting task since it is time consuming and may require us to do some cleaning procedures that we do not normally do. The fact is, most of us do not clean our window blinds, until the dusts are so obvious that they overtake our windows. When this happens, we have no choice but to do the labor.
Cleaning Aluminum or Vinyl Blinds – Aluminum blinds and vinyl blinds are the types of blinds that are easy to clean. They require no special equipment and can be cleaned with virtually any type of method: soap and water, vacuum cleaner, feather duster, cloth, etc. 1. Generally, regularly cleaning by wiping with dusting mitt, soft dust cloth or vacuum cleaner with a round brush attachment, aluminum and vinyl blinds can maintain their best look. Doing this may require taking down the blinding from its hanging or by simply tilting the slats down. These procedures can ensure that your blinds will last long. However, when you don’t have the time to clean it at least once a week, there are other ways to clean your blinds effectively. 2. Using chemically treated dust cloth can effectively remove the dusts off your blind and in between the stats. 3. When the blinds need major cleaning, take them down and wash them with garden hose. Make sure that the slats are down. 4. You can also lay down your blinds on water-filled bath tub. Add soap. To prevent the tub from scratches, place a towel at the surface of the tub where you will put the blinds. 5. Wiping the blinds with wet or dry sponge is another effective way to clean your blinds. 6. Do not use rough materials such as metal scrub to clean aluminum or vinyl blinds. Before hanging the blinds back to your windows, make sure that they are all dry to avoid dust build up. Wood Blinds – Unlike aluminum blinds, wood blinds cannot be cleaned with water. Only dry materials can be used to clean wood blinds. 1. Dusting mitt, soft dust cloth or vacuum cleaner with a round brush attachment can also be used when cleaning wood blinds. You can either clean them hanging or taking them down. 2. There are some variants of wood blinds, however, that can be cleaned with damp cloth. 3. When vacuuming or dusting horizontal wood blinds, brush them from left to right or right to left. Use downward stroke only if the blinds are vertical. (Same method goes with other types of blinds.) 4. If you want to clean a particular spot, use dry cloth and wipe the area of the blind. This thing also goes when cleaning portions of vinyl and aluminum blinds. Cleaning Fabric Blinds – Regular cleaning of fabric blinds is a must since they attract more dust. 1. Vacuuming and brushing are two of the most effective ways to clean the fabric blinds. Periodic cleaning is a must to keep its beauty. 2. Cleaning by soaking them under water is also effective but this procedure may affect the color and texture of the fabric. As an alternative, take them to dry cleaners. As a final tip, after cleaning your window blinds, apply a sheet of fabric softener. This prevents dusts from building up your newly cleaned blinds. Related Articles on Window Blinds and Coverings
