Home Tips for Cleaning Window Blinds

You have selected your décor and are pleased with your room’s ambience. The windows are dressed with valances, swags, and their lovely ruffled curtains are elegantly tied back with decorative hardware pieces. Now there’s only one thing left to do, clean the blinds.

Cleaning window blind can be a bit tricky at first for the novice. Blinds tend to become knotted and twisted once they have been improperly handled, making cleaning them a bit of chore. However, using a few tips you can easily clean your window blinds and have the perfect window setting that you’ve always dreamed of.

Vacuuming and Dusting

There are different types of blinds; some are made from wood, plastic, or aluminum. A simple way to maintain the cleanliness of your blinds is to use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner and vacuum them. An easy way to vacuum them is to run the brush over the blinds with the blinds facing down. Then vacuum them a second time with the blinds up. You can simply vacuum the surrounding edges of the blinds as well.

You can dust your blinds using the same method as described for vacuuming. However, it should be noted to always begin dusting or vacuuming from the top of the blinds, and then work your way down. This prevents dust from falling from the top-level blinds onto the lower levels.

Washing Window Blinds

Sometimes blinds become so dirty that the best way to tackle the job is to wash them. An easy solution is to bring the blinds outside and hang them from a suitable area. Using a prepared cleaning solution (you can use your favorite cleaner mixed with water) wash the blinds and rinse them with your garden hose (make sure you pick a nice sunny day with favorable weather). Allow the blinds to air dry in the warmth of the hot sun and then bring them back in the home. If you are sensitive to allergies or any outdoor allergic triggers, you can hang the blinds up then lightly vacuum them again with your brush attachment.
