Sound Proof Window Coverings: Different Ways to Protect the Interior of Your HomeBy: Osmundo Bernabe
Window coverings are the element needed if you want some privacy as well as protection to the furniture and other things inside your room from weather element abuses or from peeping neighbors. There are many different kinds of window coverings that you can get from the market. Depending on your needs and preference, you can look through the stores and specialty shops for this window accessory.
Most of the time, people look for a window covering that will shield the interior from prolonged exposure to sunlight, avoid rain waters to penetrate and wet the things inside. There are also those that elect to install window coverings for the purpose of avoiding other people to see what is inside the room. And there are also those that do not want any kind of noise from being absorbed inside the room. If you are looking for a window covering for the latter purpose, you will have to look for this special kind of window accessory: the sound-proof window covering. This type is generally different from the other types in such a way that they are integrated with special kind of materials in order to dampen, avoid, and even block those unwanted noises coming from the outside. These products are treated with sound deadening materials, sound-proofing fabrics, and other mass loaded materials. These materials are used on other sound-proofing applications such as on the ceiling, doors, walls, and others. If you want to have sound-proof windows, this does not mean removing and replacing the existing windows. All it takes is a sound barrier material to be applied on each window to be sound-proofed. The windows would not be physically altered but instead would only be enhanced with the application. After the application, they can still be opened and closed just the way they used to. Furthermore, they can still be cleaned just when you used to before the application. Double-Paned and Vinyl Framed Window Coverings and Other Types Sound proof window coverings are typically in the form of double-paned or vinyl-frame sound barriers. The double-paned window coverings typically reduce noise to as much as 20%; while window coverings made of vinyl frames can reduce unwanted noise from 30% to as much as 50%. They will provide the right level of sound barring so that obnoxious noises coming from the street, or from your neighbor’s, are not going to annoy you. Heavy-lined drape materials are also good choice to put most noises away. Foam-filled plantation shutters are also available for sound-proofing windows. DIY Sound-Proof Window Covering for You If you want an alternative to replace those double-paned or vinyl-frame windows, you can install a removable plug using some sound deadening materials. Materials can be acquired from your backyard. By coming up with right creation, the plug will have the capacity to keep unwanted noises as well as to block lights away. Depending on what level of noise you want eliminated, you can install using a specific thickness of the removable plug. Utilizing special tools and materials such as nail, screws, glue, thin boards, lumberyards, Styrofoam, and other sound deadening materials, you can create sound-proof mats for the window covering. After creating the mat, this can be stapled on the windows by mounting it over the window through the use of either contact cement, or nails. The Styrofoam can be used to attach deep-window frames before putting the sound-proof over to avoid incurring cracks or scratches. Related Articles on Window Treatment Styles
